Head lice bites. Have you recently noticed a rash on the back of your child’s neck? Do you wonder if the red spots are insect bites? Contrary to popular belief, when your kids have head lice you cannot see the lice bites. After a couple of months of head lice, your child may develop a rash on the back of her neck. Like Mosquitos, head lice leave saliva, anesthetic, and an anticoagulant when they take a blood meal. The majority of people do  not have an allergic reaction to these substances, however some do. This allergic reaction can cause itching of the scalp and an allergic rash on the back of the neck, or other areas of the skin.

It can be difficult to find head lice. Effective head lice removal treatment is the priority. Once the lice and nits are removed, it can take up to two weeks for the allergic rash to subside. Topical Benadryl cream can help with treatment of the allergic rash often found on the back of the neck.

Head lice bites. Do people always itch when they have Head Lice? No, people do not always itch when they have Head Lice. Most people do not have itching for the first 3 months once they’ve contracted a lice infestation. This makes sense from a Head Louse’s point of view. Head Lice do not want their host to know that they are setting up a Lice colony on their their head, until the Lice colony is well populated, and has sent out other Lice to other hosts to create satellite colonies. Then 3 months into the original Head Lice colony, the host can experience an allergic reaction, which causes the itching. Lice leave saliva, anticoagulant, and an anesthetic when feeding on a human host. One or all of these substances can trigger an allergic reaction to the bites.

Head lice bites. In fact most people with head lice do not experience itching symptoms. Contrary to popular belief, most people with head lice never experience itching symptoms.  Some people start to itch after 2-3 months of experiencing a head lice infestation. When a head louse takes a blood meal, it leaves behind saliva,  an anesthetic, and an anticoagulant. Most individuals have no immediate histamine response (allergic reaction) to these substances.

Over time, however, as the lice colony grows, flourishes and sends lice to host new satellite colonies on other scalps, some individuals, perhaps <20%, develop intense scalp itching and <10% develop an allergic rash on the back of the neck.  In an effort to kill lice home, pesticide lice treatments are used. Some head lice removal treatments containing pesticides can also actually cause itching symptoms and or skin rashes. If you find head lice confusing and stressful, take a deep breath. Head lice is manageable. Call us at NitWits to learn more 617-816-9487 www.liceinfo.net
